Percentage Calculations Made Easy
From tip calculations to percentage changes in data, here's everything you need to know about working with percentages in everyday situations.
Percentages appear everywhere — sale discounts, GST, interest rates, exam scores, salary hikes, and more. Mastering a few simple formulas makes these calculations effortless.
Finding a Percentage of a Number
To find X% of Y, multiply Y by X and divide by 100. Example: 18% GST on ₹2,000 = 2,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹360 tax. Simple and fast.
Percentage Change (Increase or Decrease)
Percentage change = [(New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value] × 100. If your salary went from ₹50,000 to ₹58,000, the increase = [(58,000 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000] × 100 = 16%.
Finding the Original Price After a Discount
If a product is sold at ₹800 after a 20% discount, the original price = 800 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = 800 ÷ 0.80 = ₹1,000. This reverse calculation is useful when you know the sale price but want the original.
Working Backwards from GST-Inclusive Prices
If a price includes 18% GST and the total is ₹1,180, the base price = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. Our GST Calculator does this automatically for all Indian GST slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%).
