What is the BMI Calculator?
BMI calculator (Body Mass Index calculator) is a quick number that tells you whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. Doctors use it. Nurses use it. People who just had a physical and are curious about what that number actually means use it. CalciHub’s BMI calculator gives you your score instantly, tells you which category you fall into underweight, normal, overweight, or obese, and explains what that means in plain language. No complicated medical terms, no confusing charts. Just a clear answer in a few seconds.
How Does It Work?
BMI calculator divides your weight by your height squared. That's the whole formula. The result is a single number, and that number maps to a category.
The formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
Or in imperial units: BMI = [weight (lbs) ÷ height² (inches²)] × 703
weight = your body weight in kg or lbs height = your height in meters or inches 703 = conversion factor for imperial units
BMI below 18.5 = underweight. 18.5–24.9 = normal. 25–29.9 = overweight. 30 or above = obese.
How to Use CalciHub’s BMI Calculator
1. Select your unit system, metric (kg/cm) or imperial (lbs/ft).
2. Enter your gender Male/ Female
3. Enter your Age.
4. Enter your Height
5. Enter your current weight.
6. Hit Calculate BMI. Your BMI and category appear instantly.
Tip: BMI doesn't account for muscle mass. A very muscular person can show as overweight even with low body fat, so treat the number as one data point, not a verdict.
A Real-World Example
Sarah is 5'6" (167.6 cm) and weighs 155 lbs (70.3 kg). She enters her numbers into CalciHub BMI calculator.
Height: 5'6" | Weight: 155 lbs
BMI result: 25.0 just into the "overweight" category.
Sarah is surprised, she runs three times a week and feels fit. That's actually pretty common. Her doctor confirms she has decent muscle tone and her BMI is borderline. The BMI Calculator gives her a useful starting point, but her overall fitness picture is more complex than one number. Still, knowing her BMI calculator helps her track changes over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. Below 18.5 is underweight, and 25 and above moves into overweight territory. That said, these thresholds were developed from population data and don't perfectly apply to every individual.
