How Does It Work?
Density is mass divided by volume. The formula is simple, and once you know it, you can rearrange it to solve for mass or volume depending on what's missing.
ρ = m / V
m = ρ × V
V = m / ρ

A Quick Example
A student has a metal block in a lab. It has a mass of 540 grams and takes up a volume of 200 cm³.
• m = 540 g
• V = 200 cm³
• ρ = 540 / 200 = 2.7 g/cm³
Aluminum has a density of 2.7 g/cm³, so this is almost certainly an aluminum block. Density is one of the simplest ways to identify a material when you can't test it any other way.
