How Does It Work?

Frequently Asked Questions
A small calorie (cal) is the energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1°C. A kilocalorie (kcal) is 1,000 small calories. The 'calories' on food packaging are actually kilocalories – a 200-calorie snack contains 200,000 small calories or 836,800 joules.
A kilowatt-hour is the energy used by a 1,000-watt device running for one hour. It equals 3.6 million joules. Your electricity bill uses kWh because joules would require impossibly large numbers for household consumption.
BTUs (British Thermal Units) appear on air conditioners, heaters, and gas appliances, particularly in the US. A 12,000 BTU air conditioner has roughly 3.5 kilowatts of cooling capacity.
Historical reasons, mostly. Nutrition science developed its own conventions before the metric system was standardised globally. The SI system uses joules, but food labelling in many countries still uses kilocalories because people are used to them.
