What is the Volume Calculator?
Volume measures how much three-dimensional space an object takes up, or how much it can hold. You need it when filling a fish tank, estimating concrete for a slab, calculating how much liquid a container holds, or sizing a box for shipping. How Does It Work?
Each shape has a specific formula:
Cube: V = side³
Rectangular Prism: V = length × width × height
Cylinder: V = π × radius² × height
Cone: V = (1/3) × π × radius² × height
Sphere: V = (4/3) × π × radius³
Pyramid: V = (1/3) × base area × height
V = volume (the output)
π ≈ 3.14159

Tip: A sphere only needs one measurement (the radius), so do not confuse radius with diameter. Diameter is twice the radius, entering the wrong one gives a result that is four times too large.
A Quick Example
A cylindrical water tank has a radius of 0.6 meters and a height of 1.2 meters. How much water can it hold?
Formula: V = π × radius² × height
= 3.14159 × (0.6)² × 1.2
= 3.14159 × 0.36 × 1.2
= 1.357 cubic meters
That is approximately 1,357 liters of water (since 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters). Useful for planning water storage or pump capacity.

Volume is the total three-dimensional space an object occupies. 'Capacity' refers to how much a container can hold — for a hollow object, these are often the same. For a solid object, only the volume applies.
Not directly with this tool. For irregular solids, one practical method is water displacement: submerge the object in a measured volume of water and record how much the water level rises. That rise equals the volume of the object.
Calculate the volume of the outer cylinder, then subtract the volume of the inner hollow section. The difference gives the volume of the material itself.
