What is the Carbon Footprint Calculator?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, mainly CO2 and methane, that your lifestyle generates in a given year. This calculator estimates your annual footprint based on your home energy use, transport habits, diet, and shopping behavior. It doesn't ask for every detail of your life. It asks for the inputs that actually move the needle. The result gives you a number in metric tons of CO2 per year and shows how it compares to the average American (around 16 tons). Knowing where you stand is the starting point for any decision to reduce it.
How Does It Work?
The calculator adds up emissions from four major categories, each converted to CO2 equivalents using established emission factors from the EPA and IPCC.
Total Footprint = Home Energy Emissions + Transport Emissions + Diet Emissions + Shopping Emissions
Each category uses an emission factor: for example, electricity generates approximately 0.386 kg CO2 per kWh in the US average grid.
Home Energy = electricity and gas consumption multiplied by their respective emission factors
Transport = miles driven per year multiplied by vehicle emission factor (varies by car type)
Diet = estimated emissions based on dietary pattern (meat-heavy, mixed, vegetarian, vegan)
Shopping = spending on goods multiplied by approximate emission factor for consumer goods
