Sleep Calculator

Find the best times to sleep or wake up based on 90-minute sleep cycles

:

What is the Sleep Calculator?

The sleep calculator tells you the best times to go to bed or wake up so you don't drag yourself out of sleep in the middle of a deep cycle. Waking up mid-cycle, even after 8 hours, leaves you groggy and foggy. Waking up between cycles feels completely different. CalciHub's Sleep Cycle Calculator takes your target wake-up time and works backward through 90-minute sleep cycles to give you the ideal bedtimes. Or flip it: enter when you're going to bed, and it shows you the best times to set your alarm.

How Does the Sleep Calculator Work?

The calculator is based on the average human sleep cycle, which lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Formula: Bedtime = Wake-up time − (90 minutes × number of cycles) − 14 minutes (average time to fall asleep)

Or: Wake-up time = Bedtime + 14 minutes + (90 minutes × number of cycles)

Recommended cycles: 5–6 cycles per night (7.5–9 hours) Minimum cycles: 4 (6 hours, not ideal but functional)

90 minutes = average length of one complete sleep cycle 14 minutes = average time it takes most adults to fall asleep cycles = the number of complete 90-minute cycles in your sleep period

How to Use CalciHub's Sleep Calculator

1. Choose your mode: 'I need to wake up at...' or 'I'm going to bed at...'

2. Enter your target time.

3. Click Calculate.

4. Review the list of optimal bedtimes or wake-up times (4, 5, and 6 full cycles).

5. Choose the time that fits your schedule and allows the most full cycles.

Tip: Consistency matters as much as total hours. Going to bed and waking at the same times every day, including weekends, does more for sleep quality than any single night of catching up.

A Quick Real-Life Example

Sarah needs to be up at 6:30 AM for an early meeting. She opens CalciHub's sleep calculator and enters her wake-up time.

Wake-up time: 6:30 AM

Optimal bedtimes (accounting for ~14 min to fall asleep): 4 cycles (6 hrs): 12:16 AM 5 cycles (7.5 hrs): 10:46 PM 6 cycles (9 hrs): 9:16 PM

Sarah is usually scrolling on her phone until midnight. The calculator said 12:16 AM would give her exactly four cycles, not great. If she goes to bed at 10:46 PM, she gets five full cycles and wakes up feeling rested. At 10:30 pm she sets a “put the phone down” reminder

Frequently Asked Questions

Most adults function best on 7–9 hours, which is 5–6 full sleep cycles. Individual needs vary, some people genuinely feel fine on 6 hours, while others need closer to 9. Consistent performance, mood, and morning alertness are better indicators than any fixed number.
