What is the Time Calculator?

The Time Calculator adds or subtracts time values, hours, minutes, and seconds, so you don't have to do the mental gymnastics yourself. It's useful any time you're working with durations: tracking how long a task took, combining several time entries on a timesheet, figuring out when something ends if it starts at a known time, or splitting a total duration into smaller chunks. CalciHub's version handles the carry-over math automatically, so 90 minutes correctly becomes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How Does It Work?

Time uses a base-60 system (seconds and minutes go from 0 to 59), which is what makes it awkward to calculate without a tool.

For addition:

Total seconds = sum of all seconds values

Total minutes = sum of all minutes values + (overflow seconds ÷ 60)

Total hours = sum of all hours values + (overflow minutes ÷ 60)

For subtraction, the same borrowing logic applies in reverse, if you subtract more minutes than you have, you borrow an hour and convert it to 60 minutes first.

A Quick Example

A video editor needs to add together three clip durations: 1 hour 45 minutes, 38 minutes 20 seconds, and 2 hours 5 minutes 40 seconds.

Entry 1: 1:45:00

Entry 2: 0:38:20

Entry 3: 2:05:40

Total: 4 hours, 29 minutes, 0 seconds

Without the calculator, adding 20 and 40 seconds means carrying over a minute, then recalculating the minutes' sum, then checking if that carries into hours. The tool handles all of it in one step.
